1inch began as a hackathon project in 2019, splitting a single trade across every decentralised exchange at once to find a better price than any one venue could quote. By late 2020 it was routing a large share of all DEX volume on Ethereum.

The airdrop landed on 25 December 2020 with no warning. Any wallet that had made at least one trade before 15 September 2020 qualified, as did anyone with four or more trades or $20 of volume before Christmas Eve. Roughly 55,000 addresses shared 90M 1INCH.

It set the tone for aggregator airdrops that followed: a low bar, a retroactive snapshot, and no announcement to game.
