Crypto airdrops, explained

Answered plainly and checked against primary sources. Browse the full list of tracked airdrops or the archive of past distributions.

What is a crypto airdrop?
A crypto airdrop is a free token distribution to people who used a project before it had a token. It rewards early users and spreads ownership without a sale. Some airdrops are announced in advance with published eligibility criteria; most are decided retroactively from a snapshot of on-chain activity nobody knew was being taken.
How do I qualify for a crypto airdrop?
There is no universal rule, but genuine, sustained usage consistently beats last-minute activity. Projects increasingly filter for sybils: LayerZero ran a self-report window and paid a bounty for reporting wallet farms, so hundreds of wallets performing identical actions is more likely to disqualify you than to help. Depth on a few protocols outperforms shallow activity across dozens. Each listing on this site breaks the qualifying steps down individually.
Are crypto airdrops free?
Rarely entirely. Testnet and points programmes can be close to free beyond gas, but most meaningful allocations have gone to people who bridged capital, provided liquidity or traded volume. Those carry real cost and real risk: gas is spent whether or not a token ever arrives, and leveraged positions can liquidate long before a snapshot. Treat any airdrop as a possible bonus on activity you would do anyway, never as a reason to take a position you would not otherwise take.
How much can you earn from a crypto airdrop?
Outcomes vary enormously and most participants receive little or nothing. A small number of distributions have been life-changing for early users, which is what draws attention to the category, but they are the exception rather than the expected result, and the headline figures quoted for them are usually the top of the distribution, not the median. Allocation normally scales with how much you used a protocol, how early you were, and how many other people qualified. Nobody can tell you what a given airdrop will be worth before it happens, and anyone claiming otherwise is guessing.
Are crypto airdrops taxable?
In many jurisdictions receiving tokens is a taxable event at the moment they land, valued at the price on that day, with a second event when you later sell. But the rules genuinely differ from country to country and some treat airdrops quite differently from ordinary income. Keep a record of what you received and when, since that record is far harder to reconstruct later, and check your own position with a qualified tax professional. Nothing on this site is tax advice.
What is an airdrop points programme?
A scoreboard the project publishes, awarding points for actions it wants to encourage: trading, providing liquidity, bridging, referrals. When a token launches, your share of total points usually determines your share of the community allocation. Some publish a running total so you can see where you stand; others keep the formula deliberately opaque and revise it as they go. A points programme is a strong signal that a token is coming, but it is not a promise.
Which wallet should I use for airdrop farming?
Use a wallet kept separately from the one holding anything you would mind losing. Farming means signing transactions on new, unaudited contracts, and a malicious signature can drain a wallet in one confirmation. Keep long-term holdings on hardware, revoke token approvals you no longer need, and never reuse a seed phrase across a farming wallet and a savings wallet.
How do I avoid crypto airdrop scams?
Only ever claim through a project's official domain, reached from its own site or verified social account rather than a search result or a reply. No legitimate airdrop will ask for your seed phrase, and any site promising to "unlock" tokens for a fee is a scam. Be particularly careful around a TGE, when fake claim pages appear in volume, and watch for lookalike tokens, which are common for projects that have not launched one at all.

Are crypto airdrops worth it?

The chart tracks what the major airdrops have actually put into the hands of their communities, around $17.3B since 2020. Cycles come and go, but Airdrop Meta is forever.

Why We Built Airdrop Meta

36 million HYPE tokens went unclaimed over a missed T&C signature. That is $1.2 billion lost to a single update, and one of many such cases.
