Aptos is a Layer 1 blockchain built by Mo Shaikh and Avery Ching, both former engineers on Meta's Diem blockchain project. When Diem shut down in January 2022, the two co-founders took the core technology including the Move programming language and AptosBFT consensus algorithm and rebuilt it as an independent chain. Backed by $350 million from a16z, FTX Ventures, Jump Crypto, and Binance Labs, Aptos launched its mainnet on October 18, 2022 as the first production deployment of Move technology. It claims the ability to process over 150,000 transactions per second through its parallel execution engine Block-STM. The APT airdrop was announced on the same day as mainnet launch with no prior warning, distributing 20 million tokens directly to 110,235 testnet participants via email.
