About Iron Fish
Iron Fish is a proof of work Layer 1 where every transaction is shielded by default. Rather than offering privacy as an optional mode that few people use, it encrypts all account balances and transfers and uses zero knowledge proofs for validation, so there is no transparent pool for shielded activity to stand out against.
The distribution reflected how the chain was built. There was no points dashboard and no wallet farming route. The 945,000 IRON went to people who had actually run nodes and mined through an incentivized testnet that stayed open for fourteen months, plus a separate pool for developers who had landed pull requests against the codebase.
Two conditions made this one unusually restrictive. Participants had to complete identity verification before 14 April 2023 or forfeit the reward outright, and Iron Fish stated it could not complete the airdrop to US citizens on regulatory grounds. A long running testnet with no payout at the end was the outcome for anyone in either bucket.
Airdrop Stats
How it worked to get the Iron Fish airdrop
Run a testnet node
The incentivized testnet ran from December 2021 to February 2023 in three phases. Points came from keeping a node online and mining blocks, not from clicking through a quest board.
Pick up as many phases as you could
Each phase had its own pool. Phase 1 carried 420,000 IRON, with 210,000 each for phases 2 and 3, so the earliest participants were rewarded most heavily.
Or contribute code
A separate 105,000 IRON pool went to developers whose pull requests were merged into the Iron Fish codebase, a route that needed no mining hardware at all.
Complete KYC before the deadline
Identity verification had to be done by 14 April 2023. Missing it meant forfeiting the reward, and US citizens could not be paid regardless.
Receive at mainnet
Tokens went out on 21 April 2023, the day after mainnet launched. This was a distribution rather than a claim, so there was no window to miss at the end.
Was the Iron Fish airdrop worth it?
- KYC was a hard gate, not a formality. Fourteen months of running a node counted for nothing if verification was not finished by 14 April 2023, and that deadline came before mainnet.
- US participants were excluded outright. Iron Fish said it could not complete the airdrop to US citizens. For a privacy chain this was a pointed outcome, and it caught people who had mined since 2021.
- It could not be farmed with wallets. Rewards came from node uptime, mined blocks and merged pull requests, none of which multiply by opening more addresses.
- The allocation was small by design. At 2.25% of a 42 million genesis, the testnet pool was modest. Iron Fish is a mining chain, and most supply is issued to miners over time rather than handed out at launch.
- The team has since moved on. Iron Fish engineers joined Base in March 2025. The Foundation still runs the chain and supports the token, but development is no longer where it was.
