About Sonic

Sonic is Fantom rebuilt and renamed. The chain went live in January 2025 with S replacing FTM at one for one, and holders moved across through a migration contract that allowed two way conversion until the end of March before becoming one way for good. The airdrop existed to solve a specific problem, which was bootstrapping liquidity on a chain that had an established token but no fresh capital.

It worked on that measure. Season 1 brought more than $1 billion in TVL onto Sonic during the migration. Points came from holding whitelisted assets and supplying liquidity, and the season closed on 18 June 2025 with roughly 89.5 million S allocated out of a 190.5 million programme.

The claim terms are what make this one instructive. A quarter of each allocation was available at once. The other three quarters arrived as an NFT position vesting over 270 days, and unlocking it early destroyed most of it. In the first thirty days the burn ran from 88.9% up to 100%, decaying linearly to zero only at day 270. Claim at day 90 and two thirds of the locked portion was burned. Those positions were tradable on an order book, so recipients could sell the locked claim rather than burn it, which is a more honest design than a hard lock but still a steep price on impatience.

How it worked to get the Sonic airdrop

Step 1

Migrate FTM to S

Existing Fantom holders upgraded through the migration portal at one for one. Two way conversion ran to 31 March 2025, after which the route became one way only.

Step 2

Earn Sonic Points

Points accrued from holding whitelisted assets on Sonic and from supplying liquidity in ecosystem pools. Season 1 ran from the January launch to 18 June 2025.

Step 3

Claim during the randomised window

Claims opened on a randomised schedule between 15 and 22 July 2025, spreading the load rather than opening everything at one moment. A quarter of the allocation was liquid straight away.

Step 4

Hold the vesting NFT, or sell it

The remaining 75% came as an NFT position vesting over 270 days. It could be traded whole on the Airdrop Order Book, which gave recipients an exit that did not involve burning tokens.

Step 5

Do not unlock early

Unlocking the vested portion inside the first month burned between 88.9% and 100% of it. The penalty decayed linearly and only reached zero at day 270.

Was the Sonic airdrop worth it?

  • The headline number was not the payout. Only 25% was liquid at claim. Judging this airdrop by the full allocation overstates what recipients could actually use in July 2025 by a factor of four.
  • The early unlock penalty was brutal and deliberate. Burning 88.9% to 100% inside the first month is among the harshest vesting terms of 2025. It was published in advance, so nobody was ambushed, but it made the locked portion close to worthless to anyone who needed liquidity.
  • Tradable positions were the redeeming feature. Because the vesting NFT could be sold on an order book, holders had a market exit instead of a forced burn. Most projects with penalties this steep offer no such route.
  • Roughly half the programme never went out. Season 1 took 89.5M and season 2 only 6M, leaving about 92.2M S back in treasury as Sonic moved from broad airdrops to targeted incentives.
  • It achieved what it was for. Over $1B in TVL arrived during the migration, so as a liquidity bootstrap it worked, whatever individual recipients made of the vesting.

Why We Built Airdrop Meta

36 million HYPE tokens went unclaimed over a missed T&C signature. That is $1.2 billion lost to a single update, and one of many such cases.

One overlooked deadline should not cost you a life-changing airdrop. Crypto Twitter is loud; we cut through it so you do not have to.
