About Walrus

Walrus is a decentralised storage network for large files, built by Mysten Labs and settling its coordination on Sui. It targets the case blockchains handle badly: storing something substantial, like media, rather than a small piece of state.

The March 2025 distribution went to people who had actually stored and retrieved data during the testnet, which produced a cleaner record of genuine use than a transaction count would have, and to stakers on Sui.

It was one of the larger infrastructure launches of the first half of 2025.
