About Fuel
Fuel is an Ethereum rollup that took a different route to scaling than most of its peers. Rather than reimplementing the Ethereum Virtual Machine, it built the FuelVM from scratch along with its own language, Sway, on the argument that a purpose designed execution environment can do things the EVM cannot. That choice made Fuel harder to build on and gave it a smaller, more deliberate developer base.
The Genesis Drop put 1 billion FUEL, 10% of a 10 billion supply, across more than 200,000 wallets. The weighting is the part worth studying. The single largest slice, 28%, went to phase 1 pre depositors, the people who committed capital before there was a working chain to use. Bridge users took 20% and NFT holders 12.5%.
That ordering says something explicit about what Fuel valued. Showing up early with capital, before any of it was proven, paid more than using the network afterwards. The Genesis Drop also was not the end of it, since phase 2 points kept accruing for participants who stayed on past the claim.

How it worked to get the Fuel airdrop
Pre deposit in phase 1
The heaviest weighted route. Depositing into Fuel during phase 1, before the network was live, earned a share of 28% of the Genesis Drop, the largest named slice of the whole distribution.
Use the Fuel bridge
Bridging assets to and from Fuel accounted for 20% of the drop. This was the accessible path, open to anyone who moved funds across rather than committing them early.
Hold a qualifying NFT
A further 12.5% went to NFT holders in the ecosystem, a route that rewarded collecting rather than transacting or depositing.
Claim within the month
The eligibility portal and claim opened on 19 December 2024 and ran for one month. Anything left unclaimed at the end of that window was forfeited.
Keep farming phase 2
Points continued accruing in phase 2 after the Genesis Drop, with the stated intention of converting to FUEL later, so the claim was a checkpoint rather than the finish.
Was the Fuel airdrop worth it?
- Early capital was paid the most. Phase 1 pre depositors took 28% of the drop, more than bridge users and NFT holders combined. Committing before the chain worked was the single best paid action.
- The weighting was published. Fuel named the percentage going to each route, which is more than most projects disclose and let people check whether their activity had been valued as described.
- 200,000 wallets thinned it out. Splitting 1 billion FUEL that widely meant typical allocations were small, and the token came under pressure as the supply unlocked.
- One month to claim. Opened 19 December, closed in January. A holiday claim window is an easy one to miss.
- It was not the last drop. Only 10% of the 20% community allocation went out at genesis, with phase 2 points already accruing, so staying involved still had a point.
