Curve solved a narrow problem exceptionally well: swapping between assets meant to hold the same value, such as one stablecoin for another, with almost no slippage. That made it the settlement layer much of DeFi quietly depended on.
The CRV launch is one of the strangest in the sector. On 13 August 2020 an outside developer deployed the token contracts before the team intended to, and rather than start over, Curve verified the code and adopted the deployment as official.
Around 151M CRV went to addresses that had provided liquidity before the token existed, weighted by how long that liquidity had stayed. The allocation vested over a year rather than unlocking at once, which was unusual for the period.
