Ribbon Finance Airdrop Timeline
About Ribbon Finance
Ribbon packaged options strategies into vaults a depositor could enter with one transaction, turning something that previously required active management into a product.
The RBN distribution rewarded early vault depositors first, then widened to users of Hegic and Opyn, the protocols where on chain options trading had actually been happening before Ribbon existed. Reaching outside its own user base for people with demonstrated interest in the category was the notable choice.
A later governance decision around unclaimed tokens and vesting drew scrutiny, and the project is often cited when discussing how airdrop terms can shift after launch.
Airdrop Stats

Ribbon's 1-billion RBN supply is treasury-weighted: the Community Treasury holds 49% (490M, 20% unlocked at launch and the rest vesting linearly over 3 years). Insiders take a notable ~46% the Team at 23%, Investors at 15%, and Corporate Property at 8% all on 3-year vesting with a 1-year cliff. The retroactive airdrop to early vault users was a modest 3% (30M RBN), with 1% each to Liquidity Mining and Initial Market Makers. Ribbon ran DeFi options vaults (DOVs) with a dual-token model RBN for governance and veRBN for revenue sharing and rebranded to Aevo (a derivatives exchange) in 2024. RBN launched in May 2021.

How it worked to get the Ribbon Finance airdrop
Deposit into a Theta Vault
Early depositors into Ribbon's options vaults formed the primary eligibility group.
Or trade on chain options elsewhere
Users of Hegic and Opyn qualified, rewarding demonstrated interest in the category before Ribbon existed.
Receive RBN at launch
The distribution went out in May 2021 alongside the token.
Wait for transfers to open
RBN launched non transferable, so recipients held a position they could not act on until governance enabled trading.
Was the Ribbon Finance airdrop worth it?
- It reached outside its own user base. Alongside early vault depositors, allocations went to people who had traded on chain options through Hegic and Opyn, rewarding demonstrated interest in the category rather than use of Ribbon itself.
- The token was not immediately tradeable. RBN launched non transferable, so recipients held a position they could not act on until governance enabled transfers, which is unusual and worth knowing when reading the value attached here.
- Later governance decisions drew scrutiny. Changes affecting unclaimed tokens and vesting terms after launch made it a standing example of how airdrop terms can move once the distribution is done.
