Are crypto airdrops worth it?

The 39 completed airdrops in our archive distributed roughly $15.7 billion at launch day prices. Whether that makes farming worthwhile depends almost entirely on how that total was spread, and it was spread very unevenly.

The distribution of outcomes

Five airdrops account for more than a third of the total: Arbitrum at roughly $1.97B, Starknet at $1.38B, Curve at $1.04B, ZKsync at $1.03B and Ethena at about $1B.

At the other end, Ribbon came to around $9M, BadgerDAO $25M, Arkham $33M and Initia $38M. Same effort, two orders of magnitude apart in outcome.

The cases that clearly paid

Uniswap gave 400 UNI to anyone who had made a single swap. No sustained campaign, no capital lock up, no points to grind.

Jito required holding JitoSOL, which was earning staking and MEV yield the whole time. The lowest tier still received more than $5,000 at the opening price. You were paid to be eligible.

Hyperliquid distributed 31 per cent of supply with no VC allocation, so recipients were not selling into insider unlocks.

The cases that did not

Curve vested its entire retroactive allocation across a year, so nothing was sellable at launch. The headline figure was notional.

Blast held billions in deposits for months before the chain was usable. Whatever the allocation was worth, the capital earned nothing during that period.

ParaSwap excluded tens of thousands of wallets that met its stated threshold, and many of those people considered themselves genuine users.

An honest answer

Farming airdrops as a primary strategy has poor expected value. Most campaigns do not produce a token, allocations concentrate at the top, capital committed to points programmes carries real opportunity cost, and sybil filtering removes a meaningful share of participants.

Using protocols you would use anyway, early, and staying with them has a much better record. Every large retroactive distribution in the archive rewarded exactly that, and it costs nothing extra because the activity had its own reason.

Why We Built Airdrop Meta

36 million HYPE tokens went unclaimed over a missed T&C signature. That is $1.2 billion lost to a single update, and one of many such cases.

One overlooked deadline should not cost you a life-changing airdrop. Crypto Twitter is loud; we cut through it so you do not have to.
