About LooksRare

LooksRare launched in January 2022 as a direct attack on OpenSea's position, and the airdrop was the weapon. Anyone who had traded more than 3 ETH of NFTs on OpenSea in the preceding months qualified for LOOKS.

The condition was the clever part. To claim, a wallet had to list an NFT on LooksRare. The airdrop therefore did not just reward past behaviour, it forced the behaviour the new marketplace needed: inventory on day one.

Volume spiked immediately, though much of it turned out to be wash trading chasing the platform's trading rewards. The episode is a standing lesson in how incentive design shapes the numbers a launch reports.
